Lord from Heaven
Published in Paperback by Kregel Publications (June, 1978)
Author: Robert Anderson
Average review score:

Excellent critique of modern theology.
Sir Robert Anderson was Chief of Criminal Investigations at Scotland Yard until 1914. Few people today realize he was also an accomplished lay-minister and Bible expositor, who preached on both sides of the Atlantic to crowds as large as those who gathered to hear D. L. Moody. In this volume he applied his thorough investigative methods to a Biblical study of Godhead theology. The results are an inspiring look at the Deity of Jesus Christ according to Scripture rather than to dogma developed from the second to fourth centuries. He presemts the subject from viewpoints usually overlooked by modern theologians. Highly recommended.

Really fun book! Full of puzzles, counting and mystery!
On every page of this book, you are challenged to seek and count, to study the treasure map, to use logic and observation, and to follow directions to find the clues and ultimately the treasure. The book is written in a comic book format, with lots of very detailed illustrations. My 6 year old enjoys me reading the book to her, as she solves the mystery; an older child would enjoy reading it for himself and unraveling the mystery. Each challenge is answered as part of the story on the next page. My daughter has enjoyed it so much, that now I'm buying it for all my neices and nephews.

Mammies No More: The Changing Image of Black Women on Stage and Screen
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield (01 January, 1997)
Author: Lisa M. Anderson
Average review score:

Outstanding, readable book!
This outstanding, readable book examines the images of black women on stage and film. The work, written in clear, beautiful prose, is a creative reading of the relationship between popular cultural representation and the powers of interpretation and imagery. Particularly noteworthy is the author's creative discussion of tragedy. Often, the so-called "tragic mulatta" is analyzed without a theory of tragedy at work. Anderson presents a theory from which the notion of tragedy is shown to be misguided here. Anderson traces the misgudied motif through to contemporary popular cultural representations such as Mariah Carey and Lisa Jones's recent critical work. Chapters are wonderfully characterized: "Mama on the Couch," "Mulattas, Tragedy, and Myth," "the Myth of the Whore," and "Representationand Resistance in an Antiblack World." The discussion avoids reductionism and remains atuned to the travails of contemporary race politics and theory. This is a wonderful book. It should be read widely--not only by students and scholars, but everyday folk who simply would like to gain an understanding of the powers of image and critical insight into the pitfalls of silence. Gordon, Afro-American Studies, Contemporary Religious Thought, Latin American Studies, and Presidential Faculty Fellow of the Pembroke Center for the Study and Teaching of Women, Brown University

The Man Who Cried Orange: Stories from a Doctor's Life
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (August, 2002)
Author: Eric G. Anderson
Average review score:

One of the best books I've ever read!
A wonderful book written by an author who clearly understands human frailty, both mental and physical, and the fundamental difference a caring physician can make in the lives of those he touches. I was so impressed at the simple eloquence of the stories. Each one is affecting without any artifice and each character is hard to part with as the book progresses. A highly recommended and positive exploration of the human condition.

Maria Martinez: Pueblo Potter (Picture-Story Biographies)
Published in School & Library Binding by Children's Book Press (March, 1999)
Author: Peter Anderson
Average review score:

--Interesting Story and Great Photographs--
Maria Martinez was an Indian woman from the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico. The date of her birth is estimated to be between 1881 and 1887. She learned her skills as a potter when she was a child, but went on to perfect her work and become one of the most gifted of the Pueblo potters. Her "black-on-black" style pottery is world famous.

Not far away from the San Ildefonso Pueblo is an ancient village site where the Anasazi Indians had lived. Dr Edgar Lee Hewitt led an archaeological expedition to the Anasazi site in 1908. The archaeologists found caves with artwork on the walls and also discovered pieces of Anasazi pottery. Julian Martinez, Maria's husband was one of the local men to be employed working for the archaeologists on that site. He used his drawing skills to copy the Anasazi drawings. Dr. Hewitt asked if Maria could try to duplicate the ancient pottery and he enlisted the help of Julian to paint the Anasazi designs on her work. Over the years, Maria and Julian created a lot of beautiful pottery. After Julian died in 1943, other members of the family worked with Maria creating the beautiful pieces that are cherished today. Maria Martinez died in 1980.

There are some great photographs of Maria, Julian and other members of the Martinez family at work on their pottery. Maria received many honors and acclaim during her life. In 1934, Eleanor Roosevelt invited her to be her guest at the White House.
